California, by the numbers.

California received three original area codes in 1947: 213 for the Los Angeles basin, 415 for the San Francisco Bay Area, and 916 for Sacramento and the inland north. For a decade those three carried the whole state.

Growth came in waves: 714 split from 213 in 1951, 408 and 707 split from 415 in 1959, 619 from 714 in 1982, and 818 from 213 in 1984 for the San Fernando Valley.

The 1990s cellular boom added 510, 310, 909, 562, 949 and many more. California now runs 36 active area codes — the most of any US state. The newest, 669, overlaid 408 in 2012 as Silicon Valley exhausted its number supply.

DID YOU KNOW?

Los Angeles County alone uses nine different area codes — 213, 310, 323, 424, 562, 626, 661, 747 and 818 — covering more than 10 million people across 4,000 square miles. That's more codes than 30+ entire US states have in total.

Why 415 matters in California

415 is the cultural shorthand for San Francisco — referenced by Bay Area musicians, magazines and a generation of tech founders. The 628 overlay was activated in 2015 to relieve number exhaustion, but 415 remains the prefix every San Francisco business fights to keep on the door.

Six reasons to pick a California number.

A local California prefix outperforms an out-of-state cell at every customer touchpoint.

A 415 opens Bay Area B2B doors

San Francisco buyers screen out 800-numbers and out-of-state cells. A 415 prefix signals "you're local, you're serious" — essential for SaaS and startup sales.

Beverly Hills 310 reads as entertainment

Hollywood agents, PR firms and talent reps treat a 310 prefix as table stakes. It's the difference between getting a callback and getting screened.

Pacific Time on every call

A CA-area-code number tells recipients you understand 9-to-5 Pacific — no awkward 6am cold calls from a 212 New York prefix.

LA local-pack SEO

Google ranks LA-area businesses with local 213/323/818/310 codes higher than ones using 800 or out-of-state numbers. Real impact on map-pack visibility.

Keep your real cell off Yelp & Craigslist

List your CA number on every platform — your personal mobile stays unlisted. The line forwards anywhere, including out-of-state if you move.

Free hold if you pause service

Cancel and your California number is held free for a year. No re-port, no losing the 415 you fought to claim.

Frequently asked questions about California area codes.

How many area codes does California have?
California has 36 active area codes — the most of any US state. They include 213 (Downtown LA), 310 (Beverly Hills/West LA), 415 (San Francisco), 408 (San Jose/Silicon Valley), 619 (San Diego), 916 (Sacramento), 818 (San Fernando Valley) and 28 more covering every region.
What is the oldest California area code?
213 — assigned in 1947 when the NANP launched. It originally covered the entire Los Angeles basin (including what is now 310, 323, 818, 562 and more). Today 213 is reserved for downtown LA.
What area code is Silicon Valley?
408 is the primary Silicon Valley code, covering San Jose, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara and Cupertino. 650 covers the peninsula (Palo Alto, Mountain View, Menlo Park). 669 is the overlay added in 2012.
What is the most prestigious California area code?
It depends who you ask: 415 carries San Francisco/tech cachet, 310 signals Beverly Hills/entertainment, and 213 marks downtown LA insiders. All three are heavily preferred by founders, agents and execs.
Can I get a California number if I don't live in California?
Yes. CallMama doesn't require a California billing address or proof of in-state residency. Pick any of the 36 California area codes from anywhere in the world — number selection happens at signup.
Will my outbound calls show a California prefix?
Yes. Every outbound call displays the local 213, 310, 415, 408 (or whichever code you picked) on the recipient's caller ID — Californians see a familiar local prefix, not "Unknown" or an out-of-state cell.
Can I port my existing California number to CallMama?
Yes. Any California number from AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Spectrum, Cricket or any other carrier can be ported in. Porting typically completes in 3–7 business days with no interruption to service.
Why does Los Angeles have so many area codes?
LA County is geographically huge and densely populated — over 10 million people across 4,000 square miles. As cellular adoption exploded in the 1990s and 2000s, nine codes were assigned: 213 (downtown), 323 (LA proper), 310 (Westside), 424 (310 overlay), 818 (Valley), 747 (818 overlay), 626 (San Gabriel Valley), 562 (Long Beach/Whittier) and 661 (Antelope Valley).
