A 404 reads Atlanta native
Restricted to the city core, 404 carries serious "I was here before the boom" credibility — distinct from the newer 678, 470 and 943 overlays that everyone gets assigned today.
Get a 404 Atlanta, 770 suburbs, 678 metro overlay, 912 Savannah, 706 Augusta or any of Georgia's 10 area codes on the phone you already own. The Peach State's full prefix map — pick the code your customers will recognise on caller ID.
Georgia has 10 active area codes — 404, 770, 678 and 7 more. You can get a virtual Georgia phone number from any of these area codes through CallMama without a US address or SIM card.
Georgia was assigned a single area code in 1947: 404, covering the entire state from Atlanta to the Florida border. 912 split off in 1954 for the southern half, leaving 404 with Atlanta and northern Georgia.
The 1990s reshaped the map as Atlanta exploded. 706 split from 404 in 1992 for the northwest and east (Augusta, Athens, Columbus). 770 split from 404 in 1995, restricting 404 to the city core. 478 and 229 split off from 912 in 2000.
Atlanta's growth then demanded overlays: 678 (1998) over 404/770, 470 (2010) over the entire Atlanta metro, and most recently 943 (2022). 762 was added over 706 in 2006.
Georgia's 404 was once the only area code for the entire state — a vast territory from the Tennessee line to the Florida coast. Today 404 is restricted to the Atlanta city core, making it one of the most prestigious "tenure" prefixes in the South.

Savannah, Brunswick and the Golden Isles have their own identity separate from Atlanta. A 912 prefix tells coastal clients you're local — not an Atlanta transplant.
Augusta, Athens, Columbus and the north-central counties all use 706. A 706 prefix reads as native to UGA fans, Masters week businesses and Fort Benning contractors.
