Maryland, by the numbers.

Maryland was assigned a single area code in 1947: 301, covering the entire state. For 44 years that single code carried Baltimore, the DC suburbs, the Eastern Shore and western MD.

410 split from 301 in 1991 for Baltimore and the Eastern Shore (Annapolis, Salisbury, Ocean City), leaving 301 with the DC suburbs (Bethesda, Rockville, Silver Spring, Frederick) and western MD (Hagerstown, Cumberland).

Overlays followed as Baltimore and the DC metro grew: 443 (over 410, 1997), 240 (over 301, 2001), 667 (over 410, 2012), and 227 (over 301/240, 2023). Both Baltimore and the DC suburbs now run three overlapping codes each.

DID YOU KNOW?

Maryland's 301 was once the only area code for the entire state, and is the only original 1947 code in the US to be split, then re-overlaid by THREE additional codes (240, 227, plus the inevitable future ones). Together 301/240/227 carry the DC suburbs — one of the densest federal-employee zones in the country.

Why 410 matters in Maryland

410 is Baltimore's signature — split from 301 in 1991 to carve off the city, Annapolis, and the Eastern Shore. Orioles and Ravens offices, Johns Hopkins, the Inner Harbor business district and the Baltimore-area DOJ/FBI operations all use 410. The 443 and 667 overlays cover the same geography but never match the original.

Six reasons to pick a Maryland number.

A local Maryland prefix outperforms an out-of-state cell at every customer touchpoint.

A 410 reads Baltimore native

Restricted to Baltimore, Annapolis and the Eastern Shore since 1991, 410 carries serious Charm City credibility — distinct from the 443 and 667 overlays.

301 signals DC suburbs / federal contracts

Bethesda, Rockville, Silver Spring — Maryland's DC commuter belt is heavy with federal contractors, lobbyists and NIH/NSA professionals. A 301 prefix marks you as inside that ecosystem.

Eastern Time alignment with DC + NYC corridor

Maryland sits between two major East Coast metros. An MD prefix tells federal and NYC clients you're on their schedule.

Cover Baltimore + DC suburbs from one app

Selling across both Maryland metros? Add 410 Baltimore and 301 DC-suburbs lines on one account — switch per call across the I-95 corridor.

STIR/SHAKEN-clean caller ID

NANPA-routed Maryland numbers pass carrier authentication, so cold-call recipients see your local prefix instead of a flagged "Spam Likely" tag.

Held free if you pause

Cancel service and your Maryland number is reserved free for 12 months — keep your 410 or 301 across federal contract cycles and moves.

Frequently asked questions about Maryland area codes.

How many area codes does Maryland have?
Maryland has 6 active area codes: 410/443/667 (Baltimore, Annapolis, Eastern Shore) and 301/240/227 (DC suburbs — Bethesda, Rockville, Silver Spring, Frederick — and western Maryland).
What is the original Maryland area code?
301 — assigned in 1947 when the NANP launched. It originally covered the entire state. Today it covers the DC suburbs and western Maryland; 240 and 227 are its overlays.
What is Baltimore's area code?
Baltimore uses 410 (split from 301 in 1991), 443 (1997 overlay) and 667 (2012 overlay). All three cover Baltimore city, Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County and the Eastern Shore.
What area code is Bethesda, Rockville and Silver Spring?
301 — original 1947 — covers the inner DC suburbs (Montgomery and Prince George's counties) plus Frederick and western MD. 240 is the 2001 overlay; 227 was added in 2023.
What area code is the Eastern Shore?
410 covers the Eastern Shore (Salisbury, Ocean City, Easton, Cambridge, Chestertown). 443 and 667 are the overlays. Same coverage as Baltimore.
Can I get a Maryland number if I don't live in MD?
Yes. CallMama doesn't require a Maryland billing address or proof of in-state residency. Pick any of the 6 MD area codes from anywhere in the world.
Will my outbound calls show a Maryland prefix?
Yes. Every outbound call displays your chosen Maryland area code on the recipient's caller ID — Baltimoreans, DC commuters and Eastern Shore locals all see a familiar prefix.
Can I port my existing Maryland number to CallMama?
Yes. Any MD number from Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Comcast/Xfinity or any other US carrier can be ported in. Porting typically completes in 3–7 business days.
