New York, by the numbers.

New York was assigned four original area codes in 1947: 212 (NYC and Long Island), 315 (central NY/Syracuse), 716 (Buffalo) and 914 (Westchester). Long Island moved to its own code, 516, in 1951.

The defining shift came in 1984 when 718 split from 212 to cover Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island — leaving 212 restricted to Manhattan alone, and turning it into the most recognised area code in the United States.

917 was added in 1992 as the first NYC overlay, initially mobile-only. 646, 347, 929 and 332 followed between 1999 and 2017. Today fresh 212 assignments are essentially exhausted — held by long-tenured Manhattan businesses and residents.

DID YOU KNOW?

Manhattan's 212 area code is so coveted that vintage 212 numbers have been reported selling for thousands of dollars on grey-market "number broker" services. The FCC formally prohibits number resale, but the practice persists. A 917 NYC mobile is the closest modern equivalent — instantly recognisable as New York City and still actively assigned.

Why 212 matters in New York

212 is the most recognised phone prefix in America. Restricted to Manhattan since the 1984 split, it became cultural shorthand for "Manhattan insider" — referenced famously in Sex and the City and across decades of New York film and TV. New 212 numbers are essentially unavailable today; if you want one, the path is to port in an existing 212 line rather than expect to be assigned a fresh one.

Six reasons to pick a New York number.

A local New York prefix outperforms an out-of-state cell at every customer touchpoint.

A 212 reads as Manhattan tenure

If you can secure a 212 number, it instantly signals NYC insider status — Manhattan-based business, long-time New Yorker, not a transplant. The prestige is unmatched in US telephony.

917 NYC mobile signals tri-state credibility

Originally NYC-only and mobile-only, 917 is widely recognized as "real New Yorker on a cell." Better than 646 or 332 for first impressions.

718 Brooklyn-Queens authenticity

In an era of Brooklyn gentrification, 718 carries serious local cred — Bushwick artists, Bay Ridge restaurateurs, Astoria families. Reads as borough-native, not weekender.

Eastern Time alignment with Wall Street

NY-area-code numbers tell finance and media recipients you're reachable on their schedule — 9am Eastern, not 6am from a California 415.

NYC local-pack for service businesses

Plumbers, dentists, photographers — Google's NYC local pack favors businesses with 212/718/917/646 over 800-numbers. Direct impact on first-page ranking.

Hold your 212 free between leases

Cancel and your number is held free for 12 months. Move out of Manhattan and back? Your 212 is waiting. No port, no number loss, no carrier negotiation.

Frequently asked questions about New York area codes.

How many area codes does New York have?
New York has 19 active area codes including 212/646/332 (Manhattan), 718/347/929 (Brooklyn/Queens/Bronx/Staten Island), 917 (NYC mobile), 516 (Long Island Nassau), 631 (Long Island Suffolk), 914 (Westchester), 716 (Buffalo), 585 (Rochester), 315/680 (Syracuse), 518/838 (Albany) and more.
Can I get a fresh 212 area code?
Fresh 212 numbers are essentially unavailable — the code has been in number-exhaust status for years. The reliable way to obtain a 212 line is to port in an existing 212 number from another carrier. For new lines, 917, 646 and 332 are the working NYC alternatives.
What is the difference between 212, 718, 917 and 646?
212 = Manhattan (original 1947). 718 = Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island (split from 212 in 1984). 917 = NYC overlay (1992, originally mobile/pager only). 646 = Manhattan overlay (1999). All four route equally to New York City; 212 carries the strongest cultural recognition.
What area code is Long Island?
516 covers Nassau County (western Long Island — Hempstead, Garden City, Great Neck). 631 covers Suffolk County (eastern Long Island — Brookhaven, Smithtown, Babylon, the Hamptons). Both split from 212 / 516 as Long Island's population grew.
What area code is upstate New York?
Upstate uses several codes: 518 (Albany/Capital, with 838 as overlay), 315 (Syracuse/central NY, with 680 as overlay), 585 (Rochester), 716 (Buffalo/western NY), 607 (Binghamton/Southern Tier), 845 (Hudson Valley/Catskills).
Can I get a New York number if I don't live in New York?
Yes. CallMama doesn't require a New York billing address or proof of in-state residency. Pick any of the 19 New York area codes from anywhere in the world — number selection happens at signup.
Will my outbound calls show a New York prefix?
Yes. Every outbound call displays your chosen 212, 917, 718, 646 (or whichever code you picked) on the recipient's caller ID — New Yorkers see a familiar local prefix, not "Unknown" or an out-of-state cell.
Can I port my existing New York number to CallMama?
Yes. Any New York number from Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Spectrum, Optimum or any other US carrier can be ported in. This includes prized 212 numbers — the only practical route to keeping a 212 on a flexible plan.
