Florida, by the numbers.

Florida received a single area code in 1947: 305, covering the entire state from Pensacola to Key West. 813 split off in 1953 for Tampa, and 904 split off in 1965 for Jacksonville and the north.

The real expansion came in the 1980s–90s: 407 (Orlando, 1988), 561 (Palm Beach, 1996), 850 (Panhandle, 1997) and 727 (Pinellas, 1998). By 2000 Florida had crossed 13 codes.

Florida now runs 21 active codes, with overlays added as recently as 2023 (728 over Tampa Bay). 305 — once the entire state — is restricted today to Miami-Dade and the Keys, with 786 as its overlay.

DID YOU KNOW?

Florida's 305 was once the only area code for the entire state — including Pensacola in the Panhandle, more than 600 miles from Miami. Today 305 covers just Miami-Dade and the Keys, a tiny fraction of its original 1947 territory.

Why 305 matters in Florida

305 is Miami's identity badge — adopted by Pitbull ("Mr. 305"), worn on apparel across South Beach and Wynwood, and referenced widely in Miami music. It's the original Florida area code from 1947 and now signals Miami-Dade authenticity in a way the newer 786 overlay rarely matches.

Six reasons to pick a Florida number.

A local Florida prefix outperforms an out-of-state cell at every customer touchpoint.

A 305 unlocks Miami trust

Miami is suspicious of outsiders by default. A 305 prefix passes the local check — Cuban, Venezuelan and Colombian recipients especially answer 305 over 786 or out-of-state.

Snowbird-friendly across two zones

Florida runs Eastern Time except the western Panhandle (Central). A Florida area code tells northern clients you're reachable in their time zone — no awkward time math.

No "Spam Likely" on STIR/SHAKEN

Florida's elderly population gets bombarded by scam calls. NANPA-routed Florida numbers pass carrier authentication so your call doesn't get auto-flagged.

Win Google local-pack in Orlando, Tampa, Miami

Florida's tourism and service-business density makes Google's local-pack ranking critical. A local area code is a top-3 ranking signal for FL service-area searches.

Bilingual market access

Miami (305), Tampa (813) and Orlando (407) have huge Spanish-speaking populations. A local prefix gets you taken seriously by Latin American business contacts.

Held forever if you snowbird out

Spend summers up north? Pause your Florida line — it's held free for a year. Come back in November, reactivate same number. No re-port hassle.

Frequently asked questions about Florida area codes.

How many area codes does Florida have?
Florida has 21 active area codes including 305 (Miami/Keys), 786 (Miami overlay), 407/689 (Orlando), 813/728 (Tampa), 904 (Jacksonville), 561 (Palm Beach), 850 (Panhandle/Tallahassee), 321 (Space Coast), 239 (Naples/Fort Myers), 727 (St. Petersburg) and more.
What is the original Florida area code?
305 — assigned in 1947 when the NANP launched. It originally covered the entire state from Pensacola to Key West. Today 305 is restricted to Miami-Dade and the Florida Keys, with 786 as its overlay.
What area code is Miami?
Miami uses 305 (original 1947) and 786 (1998 overlay). Both cover Miami-Dade County and the Keys. 305 carries strong local prestige — Pitbull is "Mr. 305" — while 786 was added as 305's number supply ran out.
What area code is Orlando?
Orlando uses 407 (split from 305 in 1988) and 689 (2002 overlay). The codes cover Orlando, Kissimmee, Sanford, Winter Park and the central Florida theme-park corridor.
What area code is the Florida Panhandle?
850 — split from 904 in 1997. Covers Tallahassee, Pensacola, Panama City and the entire Panhandle. Note: the western Panhandle (Pensacola/Fort Walton) sits in the Central Time zone, while the rest of Florida is on Eastern Time.
Can I get a Florida number if I don't live in Florida?
Yes. CallMama doesn't require a Florida billing address or proof of in-state residency. Pick any of the 21 Florida area codes from anywhere in the world — number selection happens at signup.
Is 321 really a "rocket" area code?
Yes — 321 was assigned in 1999 for the Space Coast (Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, Titusville) and the choice was widely interpreted as a nod to the "3-2-1 liftoff" countdown sequence used at the Kennedy Space Center.
Can I port my Florida number to CallMama?
Yes. Any Florida number from AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Spectrum, Xfinity or any other US carrier can be ported in. The porting process typically completes in 3–7 business days with no interruption to service.
