A 314 reads St. Louis native
Restricted to St. Louis city since 1999, 314 carries serious Gateway City credibility — distinct from the 636 suburban prefix that everyone in Chesterfield and O'Fallon gets.
Get a 314 St. Louis, 636 STL suburbs, 816 Kansas City, 417 Springfield, 573 central MO or any of Missouri's 7 area codes on the phone you already own. The Show-Me State's full prefix map — pick the code your customers will recognise.
Missouri has 7 active area codes — 314, 636, 816 and 4 more. You can get a virtual Missouri phone number from any of these area codes through CallMama without a US address or SIM card.
Missouri received two original area codes in 1947: 314 covering eastern Missouri (St. Louis) and 816 covering western Missouri (Kansas City). 417 was added in 1950 for southwestern MO (Springfield, Joplin).
Two splits modernised the map in the late 1990s: 573 split from 314 in 1996 for central and eastern MO outside St. Louis (Columbia, Cape Girardeau, Jefferson City), and 660 split from 816 in 1997 for northwestern MO outside the KC metro.
636 split from 314 in 1999 for the St. Louis suburbs (Chesterfield, O'Fallon, St. Charles), restricting 314 to St. Louis city and immediate inner ring. 975 was added in 2024 as the Kansas City overlay of 816 to handle continued metro growth.
Missouri is unusual in having both its major metros sitting on opposite state borders — St. Louis on the Illinois border, Kansas City on the Kansas border. The 6-hour east-west drive between them (along I-70) is why Missouri received two original 1947 area codes (314 and 816) instead of one.

Royals and Chiefs offices, the Country Club Plaza, Sprint Center and KC startup community all use 816. A 816 prefix tells locals you're from the Missouri side of the metro, not Kansas.
Springfield, Branson, Joplin — southwest Missouri and the Ozarks tourism corridor all use 417. A 417 prefix reads as native to this distinct cultural region.
