Michigan received two original area codes in 1947: 313 (Detroit and southeast) and 616 (rest of the state). 517 was added in 1953 for Lansing and central Michigan; 906 followed in 1961 for the Upper Peninsula.
810 split from 313 in 1993 for Flint and the northern Detroit suburbs. In 1997, 248 carved off Oakland County (from 810), 734 took the western and downriver suburbs (from 313). 586 split off Macomb County in 2001.
