Arizona, by the numbers.

Arizona was assigned a single area code in 1947: 602, covering the entire state. The state's slow early-century population growth meant 602 carried all of Arizona for nearly five decades — one of the longer single-code runs of any state.

Phoenix's explosive growth finally forced splits in the 1990s. 520 split off in 1995 for Tucson and the southern half. 480 split from 602 in 1999 for the East Valley (Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler), 623 the same year for the West Valley (Glendale, Peoria, Surprise).

928 split from 520 in 2001 for northern Arizona (Flagstaff, Yuma, Lake Havasu) leaving 520 with Tucson and the south-central region. Arizona has no overlays yet — 5 distinct geographic codes serve a state that's the 14th-largest by population.

DID YOU KNOW?

Arizona is one of only two US states (with Hawaii) that doesn't observe Daylight Saving Time — except the Navajo Nation in the northeast corner, which does. This creates a unique situation where Arizona is on Mountain Time most of the year, but matches Pacific Time during summer months, while parts of the Navajo Nation stay an hour ahead.

Why 602 matters in Arizona

602 is Phoenix's signature — the original 1947 area code, restricted today to Phoenix proper and a few inner suburbs. It carried the entire state for 48 years before the 1995 Tucson split, and remains the most established Valley prefix. Suns and Cardinals offices, downtown law firms and Phoenix-area businesses all keep 602 numbers on the door.

Six reasons to pick an Arizona number.

A local Arizona prefix outperforms an out-of-state cell at every customer touchpoint.

A 602 reads Phoenix established

Restricted to Phoenix proper, 602 carries serious Valley tenure — distinct from the suburban 480 East Valley and 623 West Valley prefixes that everyone else gets.

480 signals Scottsdale prosperity

Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe, Chandler — Phoenix's wealthy and tech-heavy East Valley all use 480. A 480 prefix tells clients you're from the affluent side of the metro.

520 carries Tucson + UA recognition

University of Arizona alumni, Tucson businesses, and Davis-Monthan AFB contractors all recognise 520 as Tucson's prefix — distinct from Phoenix or Flagstaff.

Cover Phoenix + Tucson from one app

Selling across Arizona's two main metros? Add 602/480/623 Phoenix lines and a 520 Tucson line on one account — full state coverage in one device.

Mountain Time alignment year-round (except summer)

Arizona doesn't observe DST. An AZ prefix aligns with Mountain Time clients (Denver, Salt Lake) in winter and Pacific Time clients (LA, SF) in summer — automatically.
