Texas, by the numbers.

Texas was assigned four original area codes in 1947 — 214 (Dallas), 713 (Houston), 512 (Austin) and 915 (West Texas/El Paso) — one of the largest initial allocations of the original NANP.

Splits followed Texas's growth: 817 split from 214 in 1953, 210 split from 512 in 1992 for San Antonio, and the 1990s added 281 (Houston), 972 (Dallas), then 832 and 469 as overlays in 1999.

Texas now runs 28 active codes — second only to California. The newest, 945, arrived in 2021 as a Dallas overlay. Dallas-Fort Worth uses seven codes, Houston metro uses four.

DID YOU KNOW?

Texas is so geographically large that the drive from Texarkana (903) to El Paso (915) is over 800 miles — longer than the distance from New York City to Chicago. The state spans two time zones, with the El Paso area (915) on Mountain Time and the rest of Texas on Central.

Why 713 matters in Texas

713 is Houston's flagship — referenced widely in Houston hip-hop and worn on apparel across the city. It originally covered all of southeast Texas; today it's restricted to the loop around downtown Houston. Newer 281, 832 and 346 overlays cover the same geography but rarely carry the same local recognition.

Six reasons to pick a Texas number.

A local Texas prefix outperforms an out-of-state cell at every customer touchpoint.

Sound local in Texas's tight-knit metros

Dallas, Houston and Austin are large but local-feeling — a 214, 713 or 512 prefix reads as "real Texan, not transplant," and that distinction closes deals here.

Beat the spam wall on cold outreach

Texans screen unknown numbers aggressively. A local Texas prefix passes the first filter — STIR/SHAKEN authentic, no "Spam Likely" tag on caller ID.

Austin 512 signals tech credibility

Silicon Hills founders, VCs and recruiters treat 512 like SF treats 415. It says "Austin native or invested here." Critical for tech sales and hiring.

Win local-pack rankings in TX metros

Google's map pack favors businesses with local area codes — a 214 or 713 number outranks 800-numbers for Texas service-area searches.

Multiple Texas codes on one app

Running across Dallas, Houston and Austin? Add a 214, 713 and 512 line on one CallMama account. Switch between them per call. No second phone needed.

Frequently asked questions about Texas area codes.

How many area codes does Texas have?
Texas has 28 active area codes — second only to California. They include 214/469/972/945 (Dallas), 713/281/832/346 (Houston), 512/737 (Austin), 210/726 (San Antonio), 817/682 (Fort Worth), 915 (El Paso) and many more covering all 254 counties.
What is the oldest Texas area code?
Texas received four original codes in 1947: 214 (Dallas), 713 (Houston), 512 (Austin) and 915 (West Texas/El Paso). All four remain active today, though their coverage has shrunk dramatically as overlays and splits were added.
What area code is Dallas Texas?
Dallas uses 214 (original 1947), 469 (1999 overlay), 972 (1996 split, suburban Dallas) and 945 (2021 overlay). All four are equally "Dallas" — newer phone lines may be assigned any of them.
What area code is Houston Texas?
Houston uses 713 (original 1947, restricted to the loop around downtown), 281 (1996, outer Houston), 832 (1999 overlay) and 346 (2014 overlay). 936 covers the Houston exurbs (Conroe, Lufkin, Huntsville).
Is 512 only Austin?
Yes — since the 1992 split that moved San Antonio to 210, 512 has been restricted to Austin and the immediate metro (Round Rock, Cedar Park, San Marcos, Bastrop). 737 was added in 2013 as the Austin overlay.
Can I get a Texas number if I don't live in Texas?
Yes. CallMama doesn't require a Texas billing address or proof of in-state residency. Pick any of the 28 Texas area codes from anywhere in the world — number selection happens at signup.
Can I have multiple Texas area codes on one account?
Yes. Add a 214 Dallas, 713 Houston and 512 Austin line on one account. Each line keeps its own voicemail and forwarding rules — useful for sales teams covering multiple TX metros from one device.
Can I port my Texas number to CallMama?
Yes. Any Texas number from AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Spectrum, Frontier or any other carrier can be ported in. The porting process typically completes in 3–7 business days with no service interruption.
