Pennsylvania, by the numbers.

Pennsylvania received three original area codes in 1947: 215 (Philadelphia and southeastern PA), 412 (Pittsburgh and the southwest) and 717 (central and eastern Pennsylvania). 814 was added in 1953 to carve out the central-north regions.

The 1990s splits redrew the map: 610 split from 215 in 1994 for the Lehigh Valley and suburban Philadelphia; 570 split from 717 in 1998 for the northeast; 724 split from 412 the same year for southwest PA.

Overlays followed as cellular demand grew: 267 (1998) and 445 (2018) over Philadelphia, 484 (1999) over the Lehigh Valley, 272 (2013) over Scranton, 223 (2014) over Harrisburg, and 878 (2014) over Pittsburgh.

DID YOU KNOW?

Pennsylvania was one of only a handful of states allocated three original area codes in 1947 — reflecting both its industrial density (Philadelphia and Pittsburgh) and its geographic spread across the Appalachians.

Why 215 matters in Pennsylvania

215 is Philadelphia's signature — the city's original 1947 area code, used by cheesesteak counters, Center City law firms, Eagles fan groups and Old City galleries. Despite the 267 and 445 overlays, 215 remains the prefix every Philly business fights to keep on the door.

Six reasons to pick a Pennsylvania number.

A local Pennsylvania prefix outperforms an out-of-state cell at every customer touchpoint.

A 215 reads Philadelphia native

Philly is a tight-knit market that screens transplants. A 215 prefix signals you're local — essential for Center City law, real estate and SMB sales.

412 carries Pittsburgh authenticity

Steelers fans, Steel City businesses and CMU alumni all recognise 412 as the city's original prefix — distinct from the newer 724 and 878 overlays.

Cover both metros from one app

Running across Philadelphia and Pittsburgh? Add a 215 line and a 412 line on the same account. Switch per call — Eastern PA and Western PA from one device.

Eastern Time alignment with finance & media

A PA prefix tells East Coast clients you're reachable on their schedule — no time-zone math from a California or Texas cell.

STIR/SHAKEN-clean caller ID

NANPA-routed Pennsylvania numbers pass carrier authentication, so cold-call recipients see your local prefix instead of a flagged "Spam Likely" tag.

Held free if you pause

Cancel service and your Pennsylvania number is reserved free for 12 months — no re-port fees, no losing the 215 or 412 you fought to claim.
