Our directory lists 255 active country calling codes covering every sovereign nation, territory, dependency and special service worldwide. There are roughly 195 sovereign countries — the higher count includes territories like American Samoa, Aruba, Bermuda and Hong Kong, each with their own ITU code. Codes are 1-to-3 digits long and grouped into 9 ITU numbering zones.

+1 is the country code for the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), shared by the United States, Canada and 25 Caribbean and Pacific territories. The first three digits after +1 are the area code that distinguishes individual NANP members.

The country code identifies the country (e.g. +44 for the UK). The area code identifies a geographic region inside that country (e.g. 20 for London). Both are needed when dialing internationally; the area code comes immediately after the country code.

Dial your country's exit code (most use 00; NANP uses 011; Australia uses 0011), then the destination country code, then the area code, then the local number. From any mobile, replace the exit code with the + sign.

The + is the standard international notation defined in ITU-T E.123. On any GSM mobile phone the + is automatically replaced with the local exit code, so a number written +91 98 1234 5678 dials correctly from anywhere in the world.

Yes in most cases. Many countries use a leading 0 for domestic long-distance dialing (the trunk prefix). When dialing from abroad you omit this 0 — London 020 7946 0000 becomes +44 20 7946 0000. Italy is the exception — keep the leading 0.

+800 is the Universal International Freephone Number (UIFN). It is a non-geographic toll-free range assigned by the ITU that lets a company offer a single freephone number reachable from any participating country.

+870 is the Inmarsat satellite service code. It reaches mobile satellite terminals on the Inmarsat global network — used for maritime, aviation and remote-location communications. Codes +871 to +874 were consolidated into +870 in 2008.

E.164 is the ITU-T recommendation that defines the international public telephone numbering plan. Every valid international number begins with +, followed by the country code and subscriber number, with a maximum length of 15 digits.

Country codes are between one and three digits long. Three-digit codes include +358 (Finland), +880 (Bangladesh), +971 (UAE) and +972 (Israel). The shortest are one digit: +1 (NANP) and +7 (Russia/Kazakhstan).
