02 — THE BASICS

What is the +1 country code?

A look behind the most-dialed prefix on Earth — where it came from, why it works the way it does, and who exactly belongs to it.

A single global digit

+1 is the only one-digit country code in active use worldwide. The shortest possible prefix, used to dial any US phone number from anywhere on Earth.

27 nations share it

The USA, Canada and 25 Caribbean and Pacific territories form the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) — all reachable with +1, distinguished by their 3-digit area code.

Always 10 digits

Every US phone number is exactly 10 digits after the +1 — a 3-digit area code (NPA), 3-digit prefix (NXX) and 4-digit subscriber number. Total length: 11 digits.

DID YOU KNOW

Important since 2021: 10-digit dialing is now required for every local call in the US. The 988 Crisis Lifeline created conflicts with 82 area codes that have a 988 prefix.

03 — QUICK FACTS

A quick read on how it works.

An American phone number in international format is written as +1 NPA NXX-XXXX — for example, +1 212 555 0100 for a Manhattan number. NPA is the area code, NXX is the central-office code, and XXXX is the subscriber line.

This structure is defined by ITU-T E.164, the international public-telephone numbering standard. The USA was one of the first countries to adopt it, and the format hasn't changed since.

Want to call USA from abroad? Dial your country's exit code (00 in most countries, 0011 in Australia, 010 in Japan), then 1, then the US number. On any mobile, simply replace the exit code with a + sign.
04 — COVERAGE

Where a +1 number reaches.

From New York harbor to a beach in Honolulu, every American metro lives behind a +1. Pick the area code that matches who you're talking to.

06 — WHY +1

Six reasons people pick a US number.

The only single-digit country code in active use — recognised by every phone in the world. And that's just the start.

01

Recognised everywhere

+1 is the most-dialed country code on Earth. Customers, banks and apps instantly trust a US number — no second-guessing.

02

Beyond just the US

Calling Toronto, Kingston, Hamilton, or San Juan? Your +1 reaches them all under the same numbering plan — no extra plan, no extra setup.

03

SMS & verification ready

04

Pick your local identity

A 212 reads as Manhattan. A 415 reads as San Francisco. An 808 reads as Honolulu. Customers see the number that fits the city you sell into.

05

Mobile & landline alike

Unlike most countries, the +1 prefix doesn't change for mobile or landline. Carriers don't charge differently either — one rate, one format.

06

Built for OTT apps

10 — ANSWERS

Frequently asked.

The country code for the USA is +1. It is the international dialing prefix used to call any phone number in the United States, assigned by the ITU in 1947.
The +1 country code was chosen for the USA in 1947 because the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) was the largest established telephone system at the time. A single-digit code was the most efficient option for the busiest numbering region, and the ITU reserved the entire "1" zone for what became NANP.
From the UK, dial 00 (UK exit code), then 1 (USA country code), then the 3-digit US area code, then the 7-digit local number. Example: 00 1 212 555 0100 to call New York. On a mobile, replace 00 with the + sign — so +1 212 555 0100 works from any country.
From India, dial 00 (India's exit code), then 1, then the area code and local number. Example: 00 1 213 555 0100 for Los Angeles. India uses 00 as a standard international access prefix on both landline and mobile.
From Australia, dial 0011 (Australia's exit code on Telstra), then 1, then the area code and local number. Example: 0011 1 312 555 0100 for Chicago. Or simply use +1 from any Australian mobile.
A US phone number in international format is written as +1 NPA NXX-XXXX, for example +1 212 555 0100. NPA is the 3-digit area code, NXX is the central office code, and XXXX is the subscriber number. The total length is always exactly 10 digits after the +1.
NANP stands for the North American Numbering Plan — a unified telephone numbering system that covers the USA, Canada, and 25 Caribbean and Pacific territories. All NANP countries share the +1 country code and use a 10-digit number format, distinguished only by their 3-digit area code.
The USA has more than 335 active area codes covering 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 5 territories. California has the most (38), followed by Texas (28). Eleven smaller states still operate with a single area code — Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming.
The +1-800 prefix is the original US toll-free range. Calls to 800 numbers are free for the caller inside NANP; the receiving business pays the connection cost. Other US toll-free prefixes include 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 and 833, allocated by the FCC as each block filled up over the decades.
+1-684 is the country code for American Samoa, a US territory in the Pacific Ocean. It uses the +1 country code because American Samoa is part of the North American Numbering Plan, but its 3-digit area code 684 is reserved for the territory.
Unlike most countries, the USA does not use a separate prefix for mobile and landline numbers. Both use +1 and the same 10-digit format. There is no way to tell from the number alone whether it's a mobile or landline — and most carriers charge identically for either.
Yes. CallMama issues a real American number from anywhere with internet access — no carrier visit, no paperwork, no in-person verification. Works from any country with Wi-Fi or mobile data.
The USA spans six time zones: Eastern (UTC−5), Central (UTC−6), Mountain (UTC−7), Pacific (UTC−8), Alaska (UTC−9) and Hawaii-Aleutian (UTC−10). Most of the country observes Daylight Saving Time from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November. Arizona and Hawaii stay on standard time year-round.
They mean the same thing — both indicate the +1 USA country code. + is the standard international notation defined in ITU-T E.123 and works from any mobile phone worldwide. 00 or 011 is the manual exit code your country uses to "go international" before dialing the country code. From a US landline, you'd dial 011 + country code.
Yes — since October 2021, 10-digit dialing is required for every local call in the US. This change was triggered by the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which created conflicts with 82 area codes that have a 988 prefix. Before the change, you could often dial just 7 digits for local calls.
