Three signals, one lookup.

Every carrier lookup returns three data points: operator name, line type, and porting status. Sourced from live NPAC records and global carrier databases — small signals that drive routing, compliance, and fraud decisions across your entire stack.

CARRIER
Operator nameVerizon · T-Mobile · AT&T · Vodafone

The network operator currently assigned to the number — reflecting the latest NPAC porting record and live carrier data. Identifies both major MNOs and regional MVNO resellers worldwide.

LINE TYPE
Mobile, landline, or VoIPMobile · Landline · VoIP · Toll-free

Classifies the connection type precisely: mobile, landline, fixed-VoIP, non-fixed VoIP (Google Voice, Skype, TextNow), or toll-free. Line type is the primary signal for TCPA compliance gating and SMS routing decisions.

PORTING
Has the number been ported?Ported · Not ported

Sourced from NPAC — the authoritative US number portability database updated continuously as ports complete. Ported numbers can lag routing tables by up to 24 hours, causing SMS delivery failures and call quality issues if ignored.

Six industries that depend on
carrier data.

Carrier lookup is not exclusive to telecoms. Any team that sends SMS, places outbound calls, or manages a phone database uses carrier data to cut costs, reduce fraud, and stay compliant.

OUTBOUND

Sales & outbound teams

Before any outbound campaign, carrier lookup identifies mobile versus landline — the line type determines TCPA consent requirements and whether a number can legally be auto-dialed or texted.

FRAUD PREVENTION

Fintech & payments

Non-fixed VoIP numbers are the leading fraud signal at account creation. A carrier check at registration catches disposable numbers from Google Voice, Skype, and TextNow before they access your platform.

DELIVERABILITY

SMS marketing

A2P SMS delivery rates and per-message costs differ by destination carrier. Routing each number through its optimal gateway before sending reduces cost and maximizes deliverability across large subscriber lists.

EFFICIENCY

Contact centers

Real-time carrier lookup before each dial lets agents skip numbers that have recently ported, reducing failed connections and IVR fallthrough rates on high-volume outbound campaigns.

VALIDATION

SaaS & app developers

Phone field validation at registration catches unroutable, invalid, and disposable VoIP numbers before they enter your user database — protecting downstream SMS workflows and two-factor delivery.

DATA QUALITY

Recruitment & HR

Candidate contact records deteriorate as people change carriers and port numbers. A lookup pass before a hiring campaign ensures outreach reaches real, active mobile lines and reduces wasted dial attempts.

What the result fields actually mean.

Carrier lookup returns technical fields that affect routing, compliance, and fraud decisions. Here's a plain-English explanation of each term.

MNOMobile Network Operator

A carrier that owns its own radio spectrum and physical network infrastructure — AT&T, Vodafone, Jio. Numbers on an MNO are the most reliable signal for legitimate subscribers.

MVNOMobile Virtual Network Operator

A carrier that leases network capacity from an MNO and resells it under its own brand — Cricket (on AT&T), Boost (on T-Mobile), Giffgaff (on O2). MVNOs are fully legitimate but have higher churn.

NPACNumber Portability Admin Center

The US authoritative database of all ported phone numbers, managed by iconectiv. When a subscriber moves from AT&T to T-Mobile, NPAC records the port in real time. Carrier lookups query NPAC to return the current operator, not the original.

Non-Fixed VoIPInternet-based, unregistered line

A number tied to an internet service rather than a physical address — Google Voice, Skype, TextNow. These numbers can be created instantly and anonymously, making them the primary fraud signal at account registration and checkout.

Porting StatusHas the number changed carriers?

When a number has been ported, carrier routing tables can lag the actual switch by up to 24 hours. SMS sent to a recently ported number via the old carrier path will silently fail. Checking porting status before a campaign prevents these delivery gaps.

Calling internationally?

CallMama routes to the lowest-cost path.

If you're running carrier lookups to optimize international calling costs, CallMama uses real-time smart routing to select the lowest-latency, lowest-cost carrier path for every dial — automatically, with no manual lookup required.

Frequently asked.

How accurate is the carrier lookup?
Very accurate for numbers not ported in the last 24 hours. Data is pulled from live carrier databases and NPAC records. Porting events typically reflect within one business day.
Can I detect if a number is VoIP?
Yes. Results distinguish mobile, landline, fixed-VoIP, non-fixed VoIP (Google Voice, Skype, TextNow), and toll-free — so you can flag or block risky number types before they enter your system.
Does carrier lookup work for international numbers?
Yes. The tool covers 240+ countries. Major carriers and MVNOs across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Africa are all supported.
Will the carrier or number owner be notified?
No. It's a passive query against numbering databases — no signal is sent to the handset and neither the carrier nor the subscriber is alerted.
Can I run bulk carrier lookups?
The free tool handles one number at a time. For bulk list hygiene or API access, contact CallMama about our lookup API with batch processing support.
