What is E.164 and why does it matter?
E.164 is the ITU-T international standard for phone number formatting. Every API, CRM, dialer, and SMS platform that works internationally expects numbers in this exact format.
Assigned by the ITU. 1 to 3 digits, always after the + sign. Examples: +1 for US & Canada, +44 for the UK, +91 for India, +86 for China.
Narrows to a geographic area, city, or mobile network within the country. In the US this is the 3-digit area code. The validator checks the NDC against allocated ranges.
Uniquely identifies the individual line within the NDC. CC + NDC + SN combined must not exceed 15 digits total under the E.164 standard.
Format rules for the most validated countries.
Each country has a fixed digit count and allowed prefix range. The validator checks both — a number that looks right but starts with a disallowed digit will fail.
