What is an area code phone number?

An area code marks the geographic home of a phone number. A local one gets answered up to 4× more often than an unfamiliar or toll-free number — and CallMama routes every call, text, and voicemail to any device.

  • Build local trust

Local numbers get answered up to 4× more often. Customers recognise the area code and pick up.

  • Support remote teams

Give remote reps a local number in any city or state, wherever they work.

  • Expand without offices

Enter new markets instantly. No lease, no setup, no hardware — just a local number from day one.

  • Activate in seconds

Your number goes live in under a minute — no provisioning wait, no carrier delays, no contracts.

Why your city sometimes has three area codes for one neighborhood.

When a region is running out of phone numbers, NANPA can do one of two things — and the choice quietly changes daily life for everyone in the area. Almost every new code since 2000 has been an overlay.

  • Split · Used 1947 → late 1990s

The original region is cut in two. One half keeps the old code, the other half gets a new one. Half the city has to reprint business cards. Disruptive but simple — 7-digit local dialing still works.

  • Overlay · Default since 2000

A second area code is laid on top of the same region. Nobody changes numbers; new lines just start getting the new code. The price: 10-digit dialing becomes mandatory — a 7-digit local number could belong to either code.

Get your local number in three simple steps.

From picking an area code to making your first call — no contracts, no hardware, no waiting room. Everything runs through the CallMama app on iOS, Android, or web.

Area code questions, answered.

What is a US area code?
A US area code is the three-digit number that comes after the +1 country code. It identifies the geographic region — a state, city, or metro — that the phone line was originally registered in. All US codes are administered under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP).
How many US area codes are there in 2026?
There are 335+ active US area codes in 2026, spread across all 50 states, DC, and the five US territories. California uses the most (38), and eleven states still operate on a single area code.
Can I get any US area code with CallMama?
Yes. CallMama offers virtual numbers in every active US area code, including overlay codes like Manhattan's 332 and prestige codes like 212, 415, and 310.
Do I need to live in a state to get its area code?
No. CallMama virtual numbers are not tied to physical residency. You can hold a 404 (Atlanta) number from anywhere in the world. Calls and SMS work over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
How long does activation take?
About 60 seconds end to end. Search the area code, pick the digits, confirm — and the number is live on iOS, Android, and web.
What's the difference between an area code split and an overlay?
A split divides one region into two — half keeps the old code, half gets a new one. An overlay adds a second code on top of the same region. Every new US area code since 2007 has been an overlay.
Is a CallMama area-code number a real, working phone number?
Yes. Every CallMama number is a real US phone number that can place and receive calls and SMS, accept verification codes, and appear in caller ID.
Do area codes work for SMS and verification codes?
Yes. CallMama numbers receive SMS and most one-time verification codes. Some services that explicitly block VoIP numbers (certain Indian banking apps, some US bank verifications) are exceptions.
