Louisiana, by the numbers.

Louisiana was assigned a single area code in 1947: 504, covering the entire state. 318 split off in 1957 for northern and western Louisiana (Shreveport, Monroe, Alexandria), leaving 504 with New Orleans, Baton Rouge and the south.

Two splits modernised the map in 1998-1999: 225 split from 504 in 1998 for Baton Rouge and surrounding parishes, and 337 split from 318 in 1999 for Lafayette, Lake Charles and Cajun Country.

985 split from 504 in 2001 for the Northshore (Slidell, Hammond, Houma, Thibodaux) leaving 504 restricted to Orleans Parish and immediate Jefferson Parish. 457 was added in 2024 as the 318 overlay for north Louisiana — the state's first overlay code.

DID YOU KNOW?

Louisiana is the only US state that uses "parishes" instead of counties — 64 of them. The terminology dates to French colonial rule, when Catholic church parishes served as the basic civil divisions. The state's area codes still loosely follow parish geography: 504 (Orleans), 225 (East Baton Rouge), 337 (Acadiana parishes), etc.

Why 504 matters in Louisiana

504 is New Orleans's signature — Louisiana's original 1947 area code, restricted today to Orleans Parish and immediate Jefferson Parish (Metairie, Gretna, Kenner). The Saints, Pelicans, Jazz Fest organisers, Tulane and every French Quarter restaurant use 504. It's referenced widely in New Orleans bounce and hip-hop ("504 boyz") and worn on Saints gameday gear.

Six reasons to pick a Louisiana number.

A local Louisiana prefix outperforms an out-of-state cell at every customer touchpoint.

A 504 reads NOLA native

Restricted to Orleans Parish since 2001, 504 carries serious Crescent City credibility — the prefix Saints season-ticket holders and French Quarter business owners keep on the door.

225 signals Baton Rouge / LSU

LSU alumni, state government, the petrochemical corridor and Baton Rouge legal community all use 225. A 225 prefix reads as native to the capital region.

337 carries Cajun Country identity

Lafayette, Lake Charles, Cajun Country — distinct from the rest of the state in language, food and culture. A 337 prefix reads as Acadian.
