Oklahoma, by the numbers.

Oklahoma was assigned a single area code in 1947: 405, covering the entire state. 918 split off in 1953 for eastern Oklahoma (Tulsa, Muskogee, McAlester), leaving 405 with Oklahoma City and central + western Oklahoma.

For 44 years two codes were enough. 580 split from 405 in 1997 for western and northern Oklahoma (Lawton, Enid, Ardmore, Stillwater), leaving 405 with Oklahoma City and the immediate metro.

Two overlays modernised the major metros: 539 was added in 2011 over 918 for the Tulsa area, and 572 was added in 2021 over 405 for Oklahoma City. Today both major Oklahoma metros run dual codes.

DID YOU KNOW?

Oklahoma is one of the few US states where the original 1947 code (405) was NOT assigned to the largest city by population. Oklahoma City's 405 was the original because it was the state capital and central geographic point. Tulsa, despite being similar in size, received the split code (918) in 1953.

Why 405 matters in Oklahoma

405 is Oklahoma City's signature — the state's original 1947 area code, restricted today to OKC, Norman, Edmond, Moore and the immediate metro. The Thunder, Sonic Drive-In HQ, Devon Energy, the OU football program and the Oklahoma state legislature all use 405. It's referenced widely in Oklahoma hip-hop ("405" by Jabee, "OKC" by various artists) and worn on Thunder game-day apparel.

Six reasons to pick an Oklahoma number.

A local Oklahoma prefix outperforms an out-of-state cell at every customer touchpoint.

A 405 reads OKC native

Restricted to the Oklahoma City metro since 1997, 405 carries serious capital-city credibility — distinct from the 572 overlay assigned to newer lines.

918 carries Tulsa / Green Country

Tulsa Oilers, BOK Center, OSU athletic recruits and the eastern Oklahoma "Green Country" all use 918. A 918 prefix reads as native to NE Oklahoma.

580 covers western OK identity

Lawton, Enid, Stillwater (OSU), Ardmore, Bartlesville — west and north Oklahoma all share 580. A 580 prefix reads as small-town/rural OK, not metro.

Will my outbound calls show an Oklahoma prefix?
Yes. Every outbound call displays your chosen Oklahoma area code on the recipient's caller ID — OKC residents, Tulsans and western Oklahomans all see a familiar prefix.
Can I port my existing Oklahoma number to CallMama?
Yes. Any OK number from AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Cox or any other US carrier can be ported in. Porting typically completes in 3–7 business days with no service interruption.
What is the difference between 405 and 918?
Both originated from the 1947 NANP rollout. 405 was the original covering all of Oklahoma; 918 split off in 1953 for the eastern half (Tulsa). 405 covers OKC and central OK; 918 covers Tulsa and east OK.
