A 208 reads native Idaho
The state's only original area code since 1947. Every Idaho business uses 208 — Micron, Albertsons, Simplot, every Vandals season-ticket holder.

Idaho has 2 active area codes — 208, 986. You can get a virtual Idaho phone number from any of these area codes through CallMama without a US address or SIM card.
Idaho was assigned a single area code in 1947: 208, covering the entire state. For 70 years 208 carried all of Idaho — Boise in the southwest, Idaho Falls in the east, Coeur d'Alene in the northern Panhandle, all on one prefix.
986 was added in 2017 as the statewide overlay — Idaho's first additional area code. Unlike most overlay codes that cover a single metro, 986 was assigned as a state-wide overlay covering the entire 208 geography to accommodate cellular growth without splitting the state.
Today both 208 and 986 cover all of Idaho — north-central, southwest, eastern and the Panhandle. New phone numbers anywhere in the state may receive either code at random. Idaho is one of only a handful of states still served by a single original area code (plus its overlay).
Idaho held a single area code (208) for 70 years — one of the longest single-code runs in US history. The 2017 overlay (986) covers the entire state rather than splitting Idaho into regional codes, preserving 208's statewide identity. New numbers may receive either code, but every "real Idaho" business still keeps 208 on the door.

A local Idaho prefix outperforms an out-of-state cell at every customer touchpoint.

Most of Idaho is Mountain Time aligned with Utah, Wyoming, Montana. The northern Panhandle (Coeur d'Alene, Sandpoint, Moscow) is Pacific Time aligned with Seattle/Spokane.
208 covers Boise, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls, Coeur d'Alene — one prefix tells every Idahoan you're local, regardless of region.
Many of Idaho's tech transplants and newer Boise residents have 986 numbers. A 986 prefix reads as "newer wave of Idaho population growth" — still in-state.
NANPA-routed Idaho numbers pass carrier authentication, so cold-call recipients see your local prefix instead of a flagged "Spam Likely" tag.
Cancel service and your Idaho number is reserved free for 12 months — keep your 208 across seasonal moves and outdoor business cycles.
