Alabama, by the numbers.

Alabama received a single area code in the 1947 NANP rollout: 205, which covered the entire state from Huntsville's space coast to Mobile's port. For 48 years that was enough — Alabama's slow-growth telephony made it one of the last states to split.

The first split came in 1995, when 334 carved off Montgomery and the southeast. Three years later 256 split off North Alabama (Huntsville, Decatur, the Tennessee Valley), and in 2001 the Gulf Coast got its own code, 251, after Mobile's harbor district outgrew 334.

Today Alabama runs 6 codes — four geographic (205, 251, 256, 334) plus two overlays (659 over Birmingham, 938 over Huntsville) added as cellular density caught up to the metros.

DID YOU KNOW?

Alabama held a single area code (205) for 48 years — from the 1947 NANP rollout until the 1995 Montgomery split. Today the state runs 4 geographic codes plus 2 overlays, and Birmingham's 205 remains the only original code never carved off another.

Why 205 matters in Alabama

205 is Birmingham's badge — used by the city's steel-era ironworks, Vulcan Park, UAB, and the Iron Bowl rivalry. It's the only Alabama code that's never been split off from another, making it the longest continuously-assigned prefix in the state. Newer 659 overlays the same geography but carries none of the same recognition.

Six reasons to pick an Alabama number.

A local Alabama prefix outperforms an out-of-state cell at every customer touchpoint.

Sound local from Mobile to Huntsville

A 205, 251, 256 or 334 prefix reads as familiar across every Alabama metro — Birmingham clients trust 205 the way Gulf Coast leads trust 251.

Higher answer rates in the South

Southern recipients screen unknown numbers harder than the national average. A local Alabama prefix lifts answer rates measurably on cold calls.

No "Spam Likely" on STIR/SHAKEN

NANPA-routed Alabama numbers pass carrier authentication — no orange "potentially spam" label that kills response on first-touch leads.

Win Google Business in Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville

Google's local pack ranks businesses with a local area code higher than out-of-state 800-numbers. Essential for Alabama service-area SEO.

Keep your personal cell unlisted

Hand out your Alabama line on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or business cards. Your real number stays off the scrape lists.

Held forever if you cancel

Pause service and your Alabama number is reserved free for a year. No re-port fees, no losing your hard-won caller history.

Frequently asked questions about Alabama area codes.

How many area codes does Alabama have?
Alabama has 6 active area codes: 205 (Birmingham, original 1947), 251 (Mobile/Gulf Coast, 2001 split), 256 (Huntsville/North Alabama, 1998 split), 334 (Montgomery/Southeast, 1995 split), 659 (overlay over 205, 2019) and 938 (overlay over 256, 2010).
What is the original Alabama area code?
205 — assigned in 1947 when the North American Numbering Plan launched. It originally covered the entire state and is now centered on Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Hoover.
What area code is Huntsville Alabama?
Huntsville uses 256, with 938 as the overlay. The Tennessee Valley region — Decatur, Madison, Florence, Athens — all share 256.
Is 251 a Mobile Alabama area code?
Yes. 251 covers Mobile, Baldwin County, Daphne, Fairhope, Gulf Shores and the entire Gulf Coast. It split from 334 in 2001 as Mobile's population grew.
Can I get an Alabama number if I live in another state?
Yes. CallMama doesn't require an Alabama billing address. Pick any of the six Alabama area codes from anywhere in the world — no in-state residency or proof of address is required at signup.
Will my outbound calls show an Alabama prefix?
Yes. Every outbound call displays your chosen 205, 251, 256, 334, 659 or 938 prefix on the recipient's caller ID — Alabamians see a familiar code, not "Unknown" or an out-of-state cell.
Can I port my existing Alabama number to CallMama?
Yes. Any Alabama number from AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Spectrum or any other US carrier can be ported in. The porting process typically completes in 3–7 business days with no service interruption.
Why does Alabama have overlays like 659 and 938?
Overlays were added when Birmingham (205) and Huntsville (256) ran out of available phone-number combinations due to cellular growth. New numbers in those metros may be assigned 659 or 938 instead of the original prefix — but all are equally Alabama.
