Ohio, by the numbers.

Ohio received three original area codes in 1947: 216 (Cleveland and northeast), 419 (Toledo and northwest) and 513 (Cincinnati and southwest). 614 was added in 1953 to serve Columbus and central Ohio as the state grew.

The 1990s and 2000s splits added 330 (Akron/Canton, 1996), 740 (southeast Ohio, 1996), 937 (Dayton, 1996), 440 (Cleveland suburbs, 1997) and 234 (Akron overlay, 2000) — re-mapping coverage across the state.

Overlay codes followed: 567 (2002) over Toledo, 380 (2016) over Columbus, 220 (2014) over southeast Ohio and 326 (2020) over Dayton — keeping pace with cellular number demand in every metro.

DID YOU KNOW?

Ohio is one of the most evenly distributed states for area codes — five separate metropolitan areas (Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo, Dayton) each anchor their own prefix, reflecting the state's "three Cs plus" economic geography.

Why 216 matters in Ohio

216 is Cleveland's signature prefix — the city's original 1947 area code, used by The Cleveland Clinic, Browns and Cavs front offices, and downtown Cleveland law firms. Despite the 440 split that took the suburbs in 1997, 216 still anchors the city itself.

Six reasons to pick an Ohio number.

A local Ohio prefix outperforms an out-of-state cell at every customer touchpoint.

A 216 reads Cleveland insider

Restricted to the city since the 1997 split, 216 signals downtown Cleveland — distinct from the 440 suburbs. Essential for Cleveland Clinic, banking and law clients.

614 is Columbus state-capital credibility

Lobbyists, Ohio State alumni and Nationwide-area businesses all recognise 614 as the Columbus prefix — distinct from the 380 overlay.

513 carries Cincinnati local trust

A 513 prefix tells Cincinnati buyers you're not from across the river in Kentucky or Indiana — important for service businesses targeting Hamilton County.
