02 — THE BASICS

What is the +91 country code?

India was assigned +91 in 1949, putting it in ITU zone 9 with the rest of South + West Asia. Here is what every Indian number looks like and the quirks that catch most foreign callers.

ITU zone 9 South Asia

India has used the +91 country code since 1949, when the ITU placed it in zone 9 alongside Iran +98, Pakistan +92, Afghanistan +93, Sri Lanka +94, Myanmar +95 and the Maldives +960. India was assigned the "1" suffix as one of the first members of the zone.

STD + ISD codes

Indian landline area codes are called STD codes (Subscriber Trunk Dialing) — 011 Delhi, 022 Mumbai, 080 Bangalore, 033 Kolkata, 044 Chennai, 040 Hyderabad. Each city has 2-5 digits including the leading 0. The international call prefix from India to abroad is 00 (called the ISD code — International Subscriber Dialing).

Mobile starts with 6-9

Indian mobile numbers always start with 6, 7, 8 or 9 (the "+91 6/7/8/9 XXXXXXXXX" format). All Indian mobiles are 10 digits — same length whether you are dialing Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vi (Vodafone Idea), BSNL or MTNL. The first 4 digits are the operator prefix, the last 6 are the subscriber number.

DID YOU KNOW

India is the world's largest mobile market. As of 2024, India has 1.16 billion mobile subscriptions across Reliance Jio (~470M), Bharti Airtel (~390M), Vi/Vodafone Idea (~220M) and BSNL/MTNL (~80M) — more than China's mobile subscriber base. Jio launched in 2016 and became the largest single mobile operator in the world by 2020.

03 — QUICK FACTS

A quick read on how it works.

An Indian phone number in international format is written as +91 [STD code without 0] [local number] for landlines, or simply +91 [10-digit mobile]. For example, +91 22 1234 5678 for a Mumbai landline, or +91 98 1234 5678 for a mobile starting with 9.

The "0" that Indian landlines start with (011 Delhi, 022 Mumbai) is the national trunk prefix — dropped when dialing internationally. Indian mobiles do not use a leading 0; the 10-digit number 9812345678 is dialed identically domestically and internationally (just prefix with +91 from abroad).

Want to call India from abroad? Dial your country's exit code (00 in most countries, 011 in the US/Canada, 0011 in Australia), then 91, then drop the leading 0 from the Indian landline number — or just dial the 10-digit Indian mobile directly. On any mobile, simply replace the exit code with a + sign.
04 — COVERAGE

Where a +91 number reaches.

From the financial corridors of Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai to the tea estates of Darjeeling, every Indian number lives behind a +91. Pick the STD code that matches your customer city.

05 — FROM ANY COUNTRY

How to call India from any country.

Every country uses a different international exit code before the +91 India country code. From any mobile, the + symbol replaces the exit code automatically — so +91 98 1234 5678 works worldwide. Always drop the leading 0 from Indian landlines (011 Delhi → 11) when dialing from abroad.

Tip: Indian mobiles are always 10 digits starting with 6, 7, 8 or 9. Landline STD codes (011 Delhi, 022 Mumbai, 080 Bangalore) drop the leading 0 from abroad. The full E.164 format is +91 [STD without 0] [local] or +91 9XXXXXXXXX for mobile — 13 digits total.

06 — WHY +91

Six reasons people pick an India number.

+91 reaches the world's most populous nation, the world's largest single mobile network, and the global capital of OTP-driven services like UPI + Aadhaar.

01

UPI + Aadhaar OTPs land

PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, every UPI bank and DigiLocker SMS OTPs to +91 numbers. Foreign-prefixed numbers are blocked by most Indian fintech apps as a fraud-prevention measure.

02

Reach 1.43 billion people

+91 is the gateway to the world's most populous nation — over 1.16 billion mobile subscriptions across Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL. The reach of a single country code is unmatched.

03

GST + KYC verifications

GSTN portal, Income Tax e-filing, EPFO, every Indian e-commerce KYC + SEBI/RBI compliance flow expect a +91 mobile for verification. Indian businesses can't function without one.

04

WhatsApp Business + Truecaller

India is WhatsApp Business's largest market by far (~530M users). A +91 number gets the green-tick faster + appears in Truecaller name search without "Spam" flags.

05

IST: one clock, half-hour offset

All of India runs on a single time zone — Indian Standard Time (UTC+5:30). The 30-minute offset is unique to India + Sri Lanka. No DST adjustments, no inter-state confusion.

06

Pick metro or tier-2

A 011 says Delhi, a 022 says Mumbai, an 080 says Bangalore, a 044 says Chennai. Or pick a 161 Ludhiana, 261 Surat, 422 Coimbatore — the STD code is your local proof.

10 — ANSWERS

Frequently asked.

The country code for India is +91. It is the international dialing prefix used to call any phone number in India — landline or mobile — assigned by the ITU in 1949. India sits in ITU zone 9 alongside Pakistan +92, Afghanistan +93, Sri Lanka +94, Myanmar +95, the Maldives +960 and Iran +98.
The +91 country code was assigned to India by the ITU in 1949. The leading "9" places India in ITU zone 9 — the zone covering South Asia + West Asia. The "1" suffix was the next free single-digit slot in zone 9 when India was assigned, making +91 the shortest possible South Asian country code.
From the US, dial 011 (NANP exit code), then 91 (India country code), then drop the leading 0 from Indian landline STD codes — or for an Indian mobile just dial the 10 digits. Example: 011 91 22 1234 5678 for Mumbai landline, or 011 91 98 1234 5678 for an Indian mobile. On any mobile, replace 011 with +.
From the UK, dial 00 (UK exit code), then 91, then the Indian number (drop the leading 0 for landlines). Example: 00 91 11 1234 5678 for a Delhi landline. Or use +91 98 1234 5678 from any UK mobile.
From the UAE, dial 00 (UAE exit code), then 91, then the Indian number. Example: 00 91 22 1234 5678 for a Mumbai landline. Many Indian expats in Dubai keep their UAE number and an Indian +91 virtual number in parallel — UAE telecom operators (Etisalat, du) charge ~AED 1.5/min to call India.
An Indian phone number in international format is written as +91 [STD without 0] [local] for landlines or +91 [10-digit mobile]. Example: +91 22 1234 5678 for Mumbai, +91 80 4567 8901 for Bangalore, or +91 98 1234 5678 for an Indian mobile. The total length is 12 or 13 digits including +91.
The TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) reserves the digits 6, 7, 8, 9 for Indian mobile numbers. The 9-series came first (introduced 1995 for cellular), then 8-series (added 2008), then 7-series (added 2014) and finally 6-series (added 2017) as India's mobile base exploded from ~10M in 2000 to over 1.16 billion in 2024.
STD stands for Subscriber Trunk Dialing — what most countries call an "area code". Major Indian STD codes are 011 Delhi, 022 Mumbai, 033 Kolkata, 044 Chennai, 040 Hyderabad, 080 Bangalore, 020 Pune, 079 Ahmedabad. Major metros have 2-3 digit codes (including the leading 0); smaller towns use 4-5 digit codes like 0141 Jaipur or 0522 Lucknow.
+91 11 is the international prefix for New Delhi, India\'s capital — STD code 011 domestically. It covers all of Delhi NCT (the National Capital Territory) including Connaught Place, Karol Bagh, Saket, Dwarka, Vasant Kunj, Janakpuri. The neighbouring NCR cities Gurgaon/Gurugram, Noida and Faridabad use separate STD codes (0124, 0120, 0129).
+91 22 is the international prefix for Mumbai (Bombay), India\'s financial capital — STD code 022 domestically. It covers the whole of Greater Mumbai including South Bombay (Colaba, Marine Drive, Nariman Point), the Bandra Kurla Complex BKC financial district, Andheri, Borivali, Thane (within MMR), and Navi Mumbai. The BSE + NSE stock exchanges, RBI, and most Indian bank HQs route through +91 22.
+91 1800 is the Indian toll-free range — calls are free for the caller; the business receiving the call pays. The 1800 range is the largest non-geographic block in India, used by every major bank, airline (IndiGo, Air India, Vistara), insurance company, telco customer-care line, and major e-commerce platform. Some newer toll-free numbers also use the 1860 prefix, which is "shared cost" (caller pays local rate, business covers the rest).
India uses a single time zone — Indian Standard Time (IST), UTC+5:30. The 30-minute offset is unusual; only India + Sri Lanka + parts of Iran/Afghanistan use half-hour offsets globally. India has had a single time zone since 1947 (briefly used Bombay Time + Calcutta Time before independence). India does not observe Daylight Saving Time — IST is the same year-round.
Yes. CallMama provides real Indian +91 numbers from anywhere with internet access — no India address required, no Aadhaar verification, no in-person KYC. Pick from any of the major Indian STD codes (011 Delhi, 022 Mumbai, 080 Bangalore, 044 Chennai, 040 Hyderabad, 033 Kolkata, 020 Pune, 079 Ahmedabad) and your number is live in about 60 seconds on iOS, Android or web.
Yes — they mean the same India country code, written different ways. +91 is the ITU-T E.123 international format that works from any mobile. 0091 is the manual form: 00 (the exit code in most countries) + 91 (India country code). From a US/Canada landline you'd dial 011 91... instead. They all route to the same Indian destination.
India launched the 112 single emergency number on 19 February 2019 — replacing the older multi-line system (100 Police, 101 Fire, 102 Ambulance, 1091 Women's Helpline, 108 Disaster Response). 112 is now the single point of contact for all emergencies + works from every Indian mobile + landline. The older numbers (100/101/102/108) still work in most states for backward compatibility.
