02 — THE BASICS

What is the +55 country code?

Brazil was assigned +55 by the ITU in 1949 — placing it in zone 5 alongside Mexico, Colombia, Argentina + most of Latin America. Here is how Brazil's DDD (Discagem Direta a Distância) system works.

ITU zone 5 Latin America

Brazil has used the +55 country code since 1949, when the ITU placed it in zone 5 alongside Mexico +52, Argentina +54, Colombia +57, Cuba +53 and Chile +56. The "5" suffix was the 5th single-digit slot in zone 5 — keeping Brazil short despite its size.

ANATEL-regulated

Brazil's telecom industry is regulated by ANATEL (Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações). Three major mobile carriers operate: Vivo (Telefónica, ~85M subs), Claro (América Móvil, ~85M), TIM Brasil (~60M), and the smaller Algar Telecom, Sercomtel + Nextel. All are GSM/LTE/5G — Brazil deployed 5G in São Paulo in July 2022.

DDD = 2-digit area code

Brazilian area codes are called <b>DDD</b> codes (Discagem Direta a Distância — Direct Distance Dialing). Every DDD is exactly 2 digits — 11 São Paulo, 21 Rio de Janeiro, 31 Belo Horizonte, 41 Curitiba, 51 Porto Alegre, 61 Brasília, 71 Salvador, 81 Recife, 85 Fortaleza, 92 Manaus. The DDD does <b>not</b> have a leading 0 like most countries — you do not drop a "0" when dialing internationally.

DID YOU KNOW

Brazil added a "9" to all mobile numbers. In 2014-2016 ANATEL added a leading 9 to every Brazilian mobile number — so 11 8765-4321 became 11 9 8765-4321. The reason: Brazil ran out of mobile inventory in the largest DDDs (São Paulo 11 hit 95% capacity by 2010). All Brazilian mobile numbers are now 11 digits total (DDD + 9 + 8-digit subscriber).

03 — QUICK FACTS

A quick read on how it works.

A Brazilian phone number in international format is written as +55 [DDD] [local]. For example, +55 11 3232 1000 for a São Paulo landline (DDD 11), +55 21 2333 4444 for a Rio de Janeiro landline, or +55 11 9 8765 4321 for a São Paulo mobile (note the leading 9 added in 2014).

Brazilian mobile numbers are 11 digits domestically (DDD + 9 + 8) — the leading 9 is the mandatory mobile-indicator digit added by ANATEL in 2014-2016. Landlines remain 10 digits (DDD + 8). Brazil has no leading 0 to drop on the DDD — you dial the DDD directly after +55 from abroad.

Want to call Brazil from abroad? Dial your country's exit code (00 in most countries, 011 in the US/Canada, 0011 in Australia), then 55, then the DDD (no leading 0 — Brazilian DDDs don't have one), then the 8 or 9-digit local. Brazilians dialing internationally from Brazil prefix with 00XX where XX is the carrier code (0021 Embratel, 0014 Brasil Telecom, etc).

05 — FROM ANY COUNTRY

How to call Brazil from any country.

Every country uses a different international exit code before the +55 Brazil country code. From any mobile, the + symbol replaces the exit code automatically — so +55 11 9 8765 4321 works worldwide. Brazilian DDDs do not have a leading 0 — you dial the DDD directly after +55.

Tip: Brazilian DDDs are always 2 digits, no leading 0 (11 São Paulo, 21 Rio, 61 Brasília). Mobile numbers add a leading 9 to the 8-digit subscriber (so total 11 digits after DDD). The full E.164 format is +55 DD 9 NNNN NNNN for mobile or +55 DD NNNN NNNN for landline.

10 — ANSWERS

Frequently asked.

The country code for Brazil is +55. It is the international dialing prefix used to call any phone number in Brazil — landline or mobile — assigned by the ITU in 1949. Brazil sits in ITU zone 5 alongside Mexico +52, Argentina +54, Colombia +57, Chile +56 and Cuba +53.
The +55 country code was assigned to Brazil by the ITU in 1949. The leading "5" places Brazil in ITU zone 5 covering most of Latin America + the Caribbean (Mexico through to Argentina). The "5" suffix was the fifth single-digit slot in zone 5 — Brazil shares the doubled "55" with no other country, a coincidence that makes the code memorable.
From the US, dial 011 (NANP exit code), then 55 (Brazil country code), then the DDD (no leading 0 to drop — Brazilian DDDs don't have one), then the local number. Example: 011 55 11 9 8765 4321 for a São Paulo mobile, or 011 55 21 3232 1000 for a Rio landline. On any mobile, replace 011 with +.
From the UK, dial 00 (UK exit code), then 55, then the DDD + local number. Example: 00 55 61 3217 1000 for a Brasília landline, or 00 55 11 9 8765 4321 for a São Paulo mobile.
From Argentina, dial 00 (Argentina exit code), then 55, then the DDD + local. Example: 00 55 11 9 8765 4321 for São Paulo. Brazil-Argentina is one of the heaviest LatAm telecom routes — connection typically takes 2-3 seconds.
A Brazilian phone number in international format is written as +55 DD NNNN NNNN for landline or +55 DD 9 NNNN NNNN for mobile (the leading 9 was added by ANATEL in 2014). Example: +55 11 9 8765 4321 for São Paulo mobile, +55 21 3232 1000 for Rio landline.
DDD stands for Discagem Direta a Distância (Direct Distance Dialing) — the Brazilian term for an area code. Major Brazilian DDDs are 11 São Paulo, 21 Rio de Janeiro, 31 Belo Horizonte, 41 Curitiba, 51 Porto Alegre, 61 Brasília, 71 Salvador, 81 Recife, 85 Fortaleza, 92 Manaus. Every DDD is exactly 2 digits + does not include a leading 0 (unlike most countries).
In 2014-2016 ANATEL added a mandatory leading 9 to all Brazilian mobile numbers to expand mobile capacity. The largest DDDs (São Paulo 11, Rio 21) had hit 95%+ inventory exhaustion by 2010. Adding the "9" effectively 10x'd the available mobile numbers in every DDD. Today every Brazilian mobile number is 11 digits = DDD (2) + 9 + 8-digit subscriber number.
+55 11 is the international prefix for São Paulo — DDD 11 domestically. It covers the city of São Paulo + the entire Greater São Paulo metro area (Guarulhos, Osasco, Santo André, São Bernardo, São Caetano, Diadema, Mauá, Carapicuíba) — ~22 million people. The largest Latin American metro by population + GDP. Home to BM&FBovespa (B3 stock exchange), most major Brazilian bank HQs + the largest Brazilian Portuguese-speaking media market.
+55 21 is the international prefix for Rio de Janeiro — DDD 21 domestically. It covers the city of Rio (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Centro, Barra) + Niterói + the Rio de Janeiro metro. Home to the historic federal capital (1822-1960), Petrobras HQ, Globo media giant + the iconic Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, Maracanã + Copacabana Beach. The 2016 Olympics venue.
+55 0800 is the Brazilian toll-free range — calls are free for the caller; the business pays. Used by every major Brazilian bank, Petrobras, Vale, Embraer, Globo, all major airlines (LATAM Brasil, GOL, Azul), e-commerce (Mercado Livre, Magazine Luiza, Casas Bahia) + telcos (Vivo, Claro, TIM customer-service lines). The 0800 prefix dates from 1992.
Brazil spans 4 time zones: UTC−3 BRT (Brasília Time) covers the most-populous areas — São Paulo, Rio, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Fortaleza, Recife, Porto Alegre, Curitiba, Manaus). UTC−4 covers Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Roraima + central Amazonas. UTC−5 covers Acre + far-western Amazonas. UTC−2 covers Fernando de Noronha (Atlantic). Brazil abolished Daylight Saving Time in 2019.
Yes. CallMama issues a real Brazilian +55 number from anywhere with internet access — no Brazil address required, no CPF (Brazilian tax ID) required, no in-person KYC. Pick from any of the major Brazilian DDDs (11 São Paulo, 21 Rio, 31 Belo Horizonte, 41 Curitiba, 51 Porto Alegre, 61 Brasília, 71 Salvador, 81 Recife, 85 Fortaleza) and your number is live in about 60 seconds.
Brazil is unusual in requiring callers to pick a specific carrier for long-distance + international calls — the CSP (Código de Seleção de Prestadora — Carrier Selection Code). Common CSPs: 21 Claro/Embratel, 14 Brasil Telecom, 15 Vivo, 23 Intelig, 31 Oi. To dial internationally from Brazil you'd dial 00 CSP COUNTRY-CODE NUMBER — for example 00 15 1 212 555 0100 using Vivo to call New York. CallMama virtual numbers handle all CSP routing automatically.
Brazil uses three primary emergency numbers: 190 Police (the most-dialed Brazilian emergency line), 192 SAMU Medical Ambulance, 193 Fire (Corpo de Bombeiros). Brazil also has 197 Police (Investigação) + 199 Civil Defense for natural-disaster response. Unlike the EU, Brazil does not yet have a single 112-equivalent.
