Different reasons. Same tool.

From missed calls to compliance checks — area code lookup solves a surprisingly wide range of everyday problems.

Missed calls

Got a call from an unknown number? Look up the area code to figure out what city or region it came from before you call back.

Sales & outbound

Sales teams verify that numbers belong to the correct territory before launching campaigns, so they comply with state-specific calling hours.

Spam & scam checks

Many phone scams come from spoofed area codes. Cross-referencing the claimed location with the area code is a fast first filter.

Remote hiring

HR teams confirm a candidate's stated location matches their number's area code as a lightweight background-check step.

The 3 digits that place every call on the map.

Area codes were invented in 1947 under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) to route long-distance calls without operators. Over 75 years later, they still tell you exactly where a number originated.

01

NANP — one plan, 20+ countries

The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) governs area codes across the US, Canada, and 18 Caribbean territories. All share the +1 country code but are split into hundreds of unique 3-digit area codes.

02

3 digits that place a number

Every US and Canadian phone number starts with a 3-digit area code (NPA) after the +1. That code was originally assigned to a specific geographic region — a state, a province, or a major metro.

03

Overlays handle growth

When a region exhausts available numbers, a new area code (an "overlay") is added to the same geography. Today, New York City alone uses over 10 area codes — 212, 332, 347, 646, 718, 917, 929, and more.

Frequently asked.

How do I find what area code a phone number is from?
In a US or Canadian number like +1 (415) 555-0143, the area code is the three digits in parentheses — 415. Enter those into the tool above and it returns the city, state, and time zone.
Does the tool cover area codes outside the US and Canada?
Yes. International area codes are supported for major countries. For UK-specific lookup, use the UK Area Code tool which is dedicated to UK STD codes.
Why does the tool sometimes return more than one city for an area code?
Many area codes cover multiple cities or an entire region. In sparsely populated states, one code may cover hundreds of miles. The tool returns the primary city plus other notable cities sharing the code.
Can I find someone's address from their area code?
No. Area code only narrows the number's origin to a city or region. It does not reveal a street address. Number portability also means the current owner may live in a different city now.
What's the difference between an area code lookup and a carrier lookup?
Area code lookup tells you the geographic origin of a number. Carrier lookup tells you which mobile or telco network operates the number now. They answer different questions — many users run both.
