02 — THE BASICS

What is the +86 country code?

China was assigned +86 by the ITU in 1949, placing it in zone 8 alongside East + South-East Asia. Here is the structure behind every Chinese number plus the rules the MIIT enforces.

ITU zone 8 East Asia

China has used the +86 country code since 1949, when the ITU placed it in zone 8 alongside Japan +81, South Korea +82, Vietnam +84, North Korea +850, Taiwan +886 and Hong Kong +852. The "6" suffix was the next free single-digit slot when China was assigned.

MIIT-regulated

China's telecom industry is regulated by the MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology). All three Chinese mobile carriers — China Mobile (~970M subs), China Unicom (~340M subs), China Telecom (~430M subs) — operate under MIIT licensing. Real-name SIM registration is mandatory since 2013.

Tier-1 = 2-digit area code

Chinese landline area codes are 2 to 4 digits including the leading 0. Tier-1 cities have 2-digit codes (010 Beijing, 021 Shanghai, 020 Guangzhou). Tier-2 cities have 3-digit codes (022 Tianjin, 023 Chongqing, 028 Chengdu). Smaller cities have 4-digit codes (0755 Shenzhen, 0571 Hangzhou).

DID YOU KNOW

China runs on one time zone. Despite spanning 5 geographic time zones, all of mainland China — from Kashgar in Xinjiang to Heihe on the Russian border — runs on Beijing Time (CST, UTC+8).

This was decreed in 1949 by the PRC government for unity; before that, China used five regional zones (Kunlun, Sinkiang-Tibet, Kansu-Szechwan, Chungyuan, Changpai).

03 — QUICK FACTS

A quick read on how it works.

A Chinese phone number in international format is written as +86 [area code without 0] [local] for landlines, or +86 [11-digit mobile]. For example, +86 10 1234 5678 for a Beijing landline, +86 21 1234 5678 for Shanghai, or +86 138 0013 8000 for an Indian mobile.

The leading "0" in Chinese landline numbers (010 Beijing, 021 Shanghai) is the Chinese national trunk prefix — dropped when dialing internationally.

Chinese mobiles are always 11 digits starting with 1 (130-199 series); no leading 0 to drop on mobile. Hong Kong (+852), Macau (+853) and Taiwan (+886) use separate country codes from mainland China's +86.

Want to call China from abroad? Dial your country's exit code (00 in most countries, 011 in the US/Canada, 0011 in Australia), then 86, then drop the leading 0 from Chinese landlines (or just dial the 11-digit mobile directly). On any mobile, simply replace the exit code with a + sign.

05 — FROM ANY COUNTRY

How to call China from any country.

Every country uses a different international exit code before the +86 China country code. From any mobile, the + symbol replaces the exit code automatically — so +86 138 0013 8000 works worldwide. Always drop the leading 0 from Chinese landlines (010 Beijing → 10, 021 Shanghai → 21) when dialing from abroad.

Tip: Chinese mobiles are always 11 digits starting with 1 (130-199 series). Landline area codes (010 Beijing, 021 Shanghai) drop the leading 0 from abroad. The full E.164 format is +86 [area without 0] [local] or +86 1NN NNNN NNNN for mobile — 13 digits total.

06 — WHY +86

Six reasons people pick a China number.

+86 reaches 1.4 billion people, the world's largest single mobile subscriber base + the most-used app ecosystem on Earth — WeChat, Alipay, Taobao all expect a +86 mobile for verification.

01

WeChat + Alipay verifications

WeChat (1.3B users), Alipay (900M), Taobao, JD.com, Meituan + Douyin all require a +86 mobile to register or unlock advanced features. Foreign numbers face WeChat's tighter Friend-Verification gate.

02

Reach 1.4 billion people

+86 routes to the world's most-developed telecom market — 1.74 billion mobile subscriptions across China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom. The single largest customer addressable market on Earth.

03

Tier-1 city local presence

A 010 prefix says "I'm in Beijing — Chaoyang, Wangjing, Zhongguancun". A 021 says "I'm in Shanghai — Pudong, Lujiazui, Xintiandi". Chinese buyers see the area code and treat your offer as local.

04

Beijing Time, one clock

All of mainland China — Beijing to Urumqi, Harbin to Sanya — runs on Beijing Time (UTC+8). No DST adjustments. Your office hours line up cleanly with all Chinese contacts.

05

China Mobile / Unicom / Telecom routing

CallMama routes +86 numbers through licensed carrier interconnects so calls + SMS land cleanly with no MIIT-flagged spam scoring or "outside China" caller-ID warnings.

06

MNC + manufacturing partner facing

If you sell into Chinese manufacturing supply chains (Shenzhen, Dongguan, Suzhou, Shanghai), a +86 line is treated 5x faster than a foreign +1 or +44 line by the WeChat-first procurement teams.

10 — ANSWERS

Frequently asked.

The country code for mainland China is +86. It is the international dialing prefix used to call any phone number in the PRC — landline or mobile — assigned by the ITU in 1949. Note: Hong Kong uses +852, Macau uses +853, and Taiwan uses +886 — these are not part of +86.
The +86 country code was assigned to China by the ITU in 1949. The leading "8" places China in ITU zone 8 — the zone covering East + South-East Asia (Japan +81, South Korea +82, Vietnam +84, North Korea +850, Hong Kong +852, Macau +853, Taiwan +886, Indonesia +62, Philippines +63). The "6" suffix was the next single-digit slot in zone 8.
From the US, dial 011 (NANP exit code), then 86 (China country code), then drop the leading 0 from Chinese landlines (010 Beijing → 10, 021 Shanghai → 21) — or for a Chinese mobile just dial the 11 digits. Example: 011 86 10 1234 5678 for a Beijing landline, or 011 86 138 0013 8000 for a Chinese mobile. On any mobile, replace 011 with +.
From the UK, dial 00 (UK exit code), then 86, then the Chinese number (drop the leading 0 from landlines). Example: 00 86 21 1234 5678 for a Shanghai landline. Or use +86 138 0013 8000 from any UK mobile.
From India, dial 00 (India exit code), then 86, then the Chinese number. Example: 00 86 755 1234 5678 for a Shenzhen landline, or 00 86 138 0013 8000 for a Chinese mobile. India-China telecom routes via Hong Kong + Singapore — connection times are typically 3-5 seconds.
A Chinese phone number in international format is written as +86 [area without 0] [local] for landlines or +86 [11-digit mobile]. Example: +86 10 1234 5678 for Beijing, +86 21 1234 5678 for Shanghai, +86 138 0013 8000 for a China Mobile number. Total length is 13 digits with +86.
All Chinese mobile numbers start with 1, followed by a 2nd digit in the range 3-9. China Mobile uses 130-139 + 147/148 + 150-159 + 178/198. China Unicom uses 130/131/132 + 145-146 + 155-156 + 166 + 170/171/175/176. China Telecom uses 133/134 + 149 + 153 + 173/177 + 180-189 + 191/199. All Chinese mobiles are exactly 11 digits.
+86 10 is the international prefix for Beijing — area code 010 domestically. It covers all of the Beijing municipality including Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the CBD (Chaoyang District), Wangjing, Zhongguancun (China\'s "Silicon Valley"), the Olympic Park + the Dongcheng/Xicheng historic districts. Beijing was the first Chinese city to be assigned a 2-digit area code (postal code 100000).
+86 21 is the international prefix for Shanghai — area code 021 domestically. It covers all of the Shanghai municipality including the Bund + Lujiazui financial district (home of the Shanghai Stock Exchange + Shanghai Tower at 632m), Pudong New Area, Hongqiao, Xintiandi, Jing\'an + Xuhui Districts. Shanghai was the second Chinese city assigned a 2-digit area code.
+86 400 is the Chinese shared-cost business prefix — calls are paid jointly by caller (local rate) and business. It is the most-common customer-service prefix used by Chinese banks (ICBC, ABC, Bank of China, CCB), e-commerce platforms (Taobao, JD, Pinduoduo), airlines (Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, Xiamen Air) + tech giants (Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu). Pure freephone uses the older 800 prefix (now rarely used).
All of mainland China runs on a single time zone — China Standard Time (CST, UTC+8), also called Beijing Time. The country technically spans 5 geographic time zones (UTC+5 to UTC+9) but uses one unified zone for political/administrative unity. China does not observe Daylight Saving Time. The unified clock means sunrise can be as late as 10am in westernmost Xinjiang in winter.
Yes. CallMama issues a real mainland China +86 number from anywhere with internet access — no China address required, no Hukou registration, no in-person KYC. Pick from any of the major Chinese area codes (010 Beijing, 021 Shanghai, 020 Guangzhou, 0755 Shenzhen, 028 Chengdu, 023 Chongqing) and your number is live in about 60 seconds.
No. Hong Kong uses +852, Macau uses +853, and Taiwan uses +886. While Hong Kong + Macau are Special Administrative Regions of the PRC, they retain separate ITU country codes, separate carriers (Hong Kong: CSL, 3 HK, China Mobile HK; Macau: CTM) + separate phone-number formats from mainland China.
Since 2013, the MIIT requires real-name registration for every SIM card sold in mainland China. Subscribers must provide a Chinese government-issued ID (national ID, passport, or Mainland Travel Permit) to activate a new SIM. CallMama virtual numbers operate under licensed wholesale carrier interconnects + do not require individual real-name registration from you.
China uses three primary emergency numbers: 110 Police (the most-dialed Chinese emergency line), 119 Fire (national since 1981), 120 Medical Ambulance. There is no single "112" equivalent in mainland China yet (though 112 routes work in HK + Macau under EU/ITU convention).
