Phone number
checker verify a number's
format in seconds.

Check that a number fits the format of its country, and see its country and, for the US and Canada, its region. It checks the format only: not the carrier, and not whether the number is in service.

PHONE NUMBER

Four questions about your number, answered.

The checker applies the numbering rules built into this page. It does not query carrier databases, so it can tell you four things, and some of them only as a hint.

FORMAT

Does it look valid?

Checks the digit count and allowed prefixes for the selected country. US and Canadian area codes are checked against a list.

LOCATION

Which country is it?

Shows the country, and the city and state for US and Canadian area codes.

LINE TYPE

Mobile range?

For some countries the prefix shows a mobile range. Otherwise the line type is shown as Unknown. It cannot detect VoIP numbers.

NOT AVAILABLE

Carrier or in service?

Not available. The checker cannot tell which carrier a number is on, or whether it is active.

Three steps. Instant.

STEP 01Pick the country

Or paste the number with the country code already attached (+1, +44, +91).

STEP 02Type the number

Paste or type the phone number into the input field.

STEP 03Hit Check

The result shows whether the format is valid, plus the country, region (US and Canada) and a line-type hint where the prefix allows one.

How to check phone numbers by country.

Every country has its own numbering plan with digit counts and allowed prefixes. Here are the rules this checker applies for some of the countries in its list.

India+91
10 digits · starts with 6, 7, 8, or 9
USA & Canada+1
10 digits · valid NANP area code required
United Kingdom+44
10 digits · mobile starts with 7, drop leading 0
Pakistan+92
10 digits · mobile starts with 3
Nigeria+234
10 digits · starts with 7, 8, or 9

Why a number comes back invalid.

Most invalid results fall into one of four categories. Understanding why helps you fix the number or flag it as fake before it causes problems.

01
WRONG LENGTH

Too many or too few digits

Every country has a fixed digit count. India requires exactly 10, the US exactly 10, the UK exactly 10 after dropping the leading 0. Extra or missing digits are an instant fail — the most common error when copying numbers manually.

02
INVALID PREFIX

Number starts with a disallowed digit

Numbering plans reserve specific starting digits. Indian numbers cannot start with 1–5. US area codes cannot start with 0 or 1. A number that starts with a digit the plan does not use is not a valid number for that country.

03
NOT CHECKED HERE

Whether the block has been assigned

Regulators allocate number blocks to carriers in batches. This tool does not check allocation, so a number can fit the format and still not be assigned to anyone. Treat a valid format as necessary, not sufficient.

04
MISSING COUNTRY CODE

Pasted without the + prefix

A number saved without its country code — 9876543210 instead of +91 9876543210 — will fail if the country selected does not match. Always include the country code or select the correct country from the dropdown.

Frequently asked.

Is the CallMama phone number checker free?
Yes. The tool is free to use, no signup required.
Does the person whose number I check get notified?
No. The check is worked out in your browser from the digits you type. No one is contacted or notified.
What does "valid" mean here?
It means the number fits the format rules for the selected country (digit count and allowed starting digits; US and Canadian area codes are checked against a list). It does not mean the number is in service, assigned to anyone, or reachable.
Can it tell me the carrier or line type?
No carrier: numbers can be moved between carriers, so the digits cannot tell you. For some countries it shows a mobile-range hint from the prefix; otherwise the line type is shown as Unknown.
Which countries does it support?
The selector lists 19 countries. Pick the country or type the number with its country code.
Will the tool tell me the owner's name?
No. It does not return owner names or any personal information.
